Painting Garden Pots with Natural Colors
by Stephie McCarthy
Walking through our garden in the winter,
you'll see terracotta pots
with natural moss and mineral whites
in delicate natural patterns like this …
… and you'll see resin pots that were once a dull gray,
that we painted to match them.
They match the natural pots very well!
These pots were dull putty-color when we bought them
at thrift shops …
… but now they are magical blues and greens, even pink.
We use tropical and earth-toned paint, and just enough
water to make it easy to rub into the surface.
This pot had great detail, but no character at first.
But we knew we could do a little magic on it with paint,
and this took about one hour!
We used pinks and corals to bring out the best details and
to emphasize the rims …
Greenish-blue for the rest.
Here's how it looked when completed.
Two years later the colors are still beautiful!
Acrylic and chalk paints can be used on outdoor
containers and the colors will bond to resin, plastic,
concrete, or terracotta.
These square pots are made of plastic but are very useful
and save a lot of space where ever they are placed.
We added bright tropical blues to the exterior and rubbed
off some of the color using baby wipes.
Two years later and the colors are still beautiful
because the paint bonds so well with plastic, given time.
Concrete pots are a great value, especially 2nd-hand
like this one, which we found for four dollars.
It was a dull gray. Probably why it was such a good value.
Years ago, we turned it mossy green
and it is still one of our favorite containers!
