… my art and my life …

the art of favorite things

©StephieMcCarthy
They say artists always inevitably illustrate themselves …

©StephieMcCarthy

I'd say that is DEFINITELY true!

©StephieMcCarthy

I also illustrate the things I love, and love itself…
(lots of new things in my shop)

©StephieMcCarthy

Inspired by two fellas … one with fur …

©StephieMcCarthy

… we love him, and he LOVES sticks …

©StephieMcCarthy

… and he loves us. He's a happy fella.

©StephieMcCarthy

And our queen, Max.
She meows and we hop.

©StephieMCarthy

… her two lazy handmaidens don't, but we others do.

©StephieMcCarthy

We ALL love living in these mountains …

©StephieMcCarthy

… and one of my deepest passions is old houses …
in the secret mountain folds and in charming towns …

©StephieMcCarthy

We've been clearing out the overgrown garden behind this one …

©StephieMcCarthy

Under all those vines, and bramble
we spied gingerbread at the top of a shed.
Looks like someone ran out of paint once upon a time …

©StephieMcCarthy

Did I mention that I LOVE gingerbread?
AND paint, too. I like to say that if you cut me
paint comes out. But I love it!

©StephieMcCarthy

I depend on paints (and stains) to transform the
old house, and illustrating the things I love.

©StephieMcCarthy

Although, more and more, that paint is of the magical digital kind.

©StephieMcCarthy

Smooth sailing. Slow but steady
love guides us along.

project for mid winter

looking back on January 2018

Old Man Winter arrived in a flurry of crystal stars …

©StephieMcCarthy

A little unpredictable, and dramatic …

©StephieMcCarthy

Sometimes scary. Mostly ephemeral …

©StephieMcCarthy

Old Town Harpers Ferry looks astonishing in its sugar coating …

©StephieMcCarthy

But believe me, we stay at home on the mountain …
steep roads on icy days, makes me shiver at the thought of it …

©StephieMcCarthy

I'm all for curling up inside …

©StephieMcCarthy

Most winter days are clear here on the river …
The colors of the Blue Ridge winter are
diamond, amethyst, jasper, and aquamarine …

©StephieMcCarthy

Past winters I watched my adoptees
discover snow for the first time.

©StephieMcCarthy

Luna is now a grand dame with a luscious coat.
Now she knows lots of secrets about snow.

©StephieMcCarthy

Thank you for visiting on this winter day, angels!

Scenes from our old house project

—

It's a hobby and a passion and a life-long investment in love …

©StephieMcCarthy

This old house …

©StephieMcCarthy

Hours and hours, of which I've never regretted doing.

©StephieMcCarthy

Lots of secret pleasures, and I wonder who will
have this house after me someday?

—

scenes from the warmer seasons 2017

©StephieMcCarthy

Busy, busy, busy … here I am making the kitchen door
at the old house, look like a gypsy wagon.

©StephieMcCarthy

I researched Pinterest for embroidery patterns for the
decorations … I'm adding color now. I got this marvelous
wood finish by mixing craft paints with clear wax!

©StephieMcCarhty

How did I make this cat art?

©StephieMcCarthy

With a lot of help! I made the stencil in Photoshop.

©StephieMcCarthy

But first I had to finish this faux brick wall!
This is metal siding, embossed with brick.

©StephieMcCarthy

I painted the wall in red tones, then went back with white paint
dipped into diatomaceous earth. The grout was detailed
with a half inch round brush.

Christmas mementoes 2017

I'm a born nester …
and treasure hunting, craft lady.
This Christmas tree below came from elements
I found at church bazaars and thrift shops …

©StephieMcCarthy

Light snow began to fall around December …

©StephieMcCarthy

Just enough snow for a mini snowman …
Snow people in windowboxes … I love this idea.

©StephieMcCarthy

The mantel at the old house we are restoring …

©StephieMcCarthy

Collecting vintage style ornaments and whimsy is
a year-round preoccupation around here.

©StephieMcCarthy

A lovely tall light fixtures protects
trinkets from the cats …

I found the white horse in the barn …
