Make Stain from Paint and Water-based Wood Sealer
© Stephie McCarthy
Here's something NEW in decorative painting that brightened an old toolbox.
We blended water-based paints into an acrylic wood finish and made an easy-to-use stain.

We were able to layer and blend paint on wood, concrete, metal, and paper in our test projects. We used Behr Waterproof Wood Finish and ordinary water-based craft paints.
The CLEAR wood finish is slightly amber in color. You can use it on top of paint to add a clear-gold antiquing effect. The gold tone blends into other colors when adding paint and is not as obvious.

We work outdoors and wear a mask while using this product. We also let it fully cure until completely dry before bringing it indoors.
We found that Behr Waterproofing Wood Finish is less expensive than artist glazing medium and more workable than the glaze made for interior walls that we've tried. AND … it's very water resistant! However, we'll be testing more acrylic sealers in the future too to see if we can top the performance of this one.
We love the water resistance of this finish … our flowers got the inside of this box very wet but didn't leave a single stain.
Here's how the box looked before … and after …
Amazon sells the cedar tinted waterproofer, however we always use CLEAR. We buy it from HomeDepot.

We scoop small amounts of the wood finish onto a clean container or tray and mix small amounts of stain as we go along. We make a light stain, or more intense, on the fly … for ultimate control.
First, we primed the bare wood with clear wood finish. It penetrated very quickly but allowed for blending multiple paint colors on top.
We can lay our tray on the box without leaving a mark. This product penetrates much better than most acrylic products. However, it does take several days to fully cure.
We can use the clear wood finish to help blend on top of paint too. We added paint around the edges leaving the center more natural, but the grain shows through everywhere.
We use the same technique to add accent colors and a damp baby wipe to remove the paint if it goes on too heavily. The finish is very easy to control for at least an hour after applying.

We painted our carved appliques solid matte orange, then primed them with a bit of clear wood finish.
We layered our blue-green stain on top of the orange while the clear layer was still wet.
Layering orange and blue paints is one of our favorite combinations, reminding us of aged copper.
On day two, we glued the appliques to the box with E6000.
We added a neon green shadow around the applique.
Think of shadow areas as a chance to add vibrant colors.
Because we blended it to a translucent layer it's subtle at the same time it is colorful.
We also added translucent layers of orange and yellow stains to the corners and sides. After a few days, we gave the box a warm glow with Waverly Clear Wax.
